Getting around on the Metro

There is an extensive train network throughout Spain, so I can travel from Madrid to Barcelona in only three hours. It is highly convenient and fairly cheap as well. In terms of cars, there are large highways here as well, so many people use private cars to get around. I have friends who have used a program called "Bla Bla Car" where they share rides with people going to other cities. All they do is share gas money to travel.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

At first I was a little hesitant, but I found that it was exceptionally easy to use the train system. I already had experience with Chicago's L line, and I had been to other cities with metros. I think the only thing that really confused me at first was that I had to manually open the doors of the coach! Everywhere else I have been, doors open automatically, but not here. My first ride on the subway, somebody else let me in, so I did not see the manual mechanism. But when I wanted to get off, I stood in front of the door as we neared the platform. Finally, we came to a halt, and I looked expectantly at the door. I stood staring there for a good 10 seconds (an eternity in the fast pace of the metro) until someone reached around me to press the open button. I felt a little embarrassed, but I quickly learned. Other than that one experience, I have enjoyed riding the metro without problems.

Is this way of getting around connected to the culture and environment, How?:

I think in Madrid, more people rely upon metro and bus rides instead of cars.
