People in Finland try to incorporate nature as a part of their daily lives.
Finland's winters can be frigid, often below 0 degrees Fahrenheit! Bad snow storms frequently bring feet of snow, but people still walk to school and work! To help them walk in this icy type of weather, people have shoe spikes that they can add on and off their shoes to walk on the ice and snow without falling. People usually bundle up with oversized, heavy coats and many layers to deal with the weather. Wool sweaters are warm and are commonly worn with wool socks, gloves and hats.
Finns use saunas a lot in the winter to help with the cold. A sauna is a room that gets hot by putting water on hot stones to make warm steam. It is a common everyday activity that Finns do in the evening.
They also take part in ice swimming! There are unique socks and gloves that people wear to be able to swim in the icy waters of frozen lakes after they break the ice with an icepick.
Other everyday activities include downhill and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Finns embrace spending time outside in the daylight whenever possible. In firstt grade, students learn to ski and ice skate in gym class!
