Cali's Natural Palette

Colombia is home to around 4,000 species of orchids, making it one of the most orchid-rich countries in the world. The petals are usually vibrant colors, the center is yellow or orange and, the shape of the flower is large and open. The plant has long, green leaves that grow from the base, providing a lush backdrop for the beautiful flowers.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

I felt in awe because flowers are so beautiful and back in Columbus I am always indoors and therefore don't experience nature as much. It is not common at all to just walk down the street in Columbus and see an Orchid during your stroll! Columbus is beautiful in its own way but being able to see something as little as orchids everyday makes me very grateful.

Where does it live?:

Orchids can be found in rainforests, temperate regions, mountains, deserts, wetlands, etc.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

A lot of orchids grow on other plants, like trees, without harming them. This allows them to access sunlight and moisture higher up in the canopy, avoiding competition for resources on the forest floor. I usually see orchids on other plants whenever I spot one. Orchids have evolved unique shapes, colors, and scents to attract specific pollinators like bees, butterflies, or hummingbirds. This ensures successful reproduction.

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

Orchids also love light, but too much direct sunlight can burn their leaves, while too little light can stop their growth. Tiny bugs like aphids and spider mites can munch on orchids, making them weak and unhealthy.
