Getting around in Cali, Colombia can be very interesting. It's not always just as easy as hopping in your car and driving in calm traffic. Transportation has been one of my favorite culture shocks while being in Colombia.
There are many ways people get around. You can take the public transportation called the Mio, which is a bus with different lines throughout the city. A ride one way on the Mio can cost anywhere from 2,000-2,500 COP which is roughly $0.50 - $0.60 USD. You can get a Mio card and recharge it as needed. Taxis are also used here as well, but they're not as popular because they can be expensive. Rideshare apps such as Yango, Uber, and DiDi are also used here. If you use these apps, you will find most cars here are manual. This means that the car has to change gears to accelerate and decelerate. The most common way that people get around in Cali is by motorcycle!
Most people in Colombia drive motorcycles because it is more affordable than a car in all aspects - gas, maintenance, etc. They are also quicker and can weave in between cars to get ahead in traffic. Although it may seem unsafe, it is how the majority of the population gets around. You can even order a moto taxi if you need to, and they provide a helmet for your safety.
Fun fact: there are no metros in Colombia besides in Medellín!
