Boar-spotting in Haifa!

Introduction:

At a maximum of 220 pounds, boars are the heftiest wild animal found in Israel today. However, they are shy and largely nocturnal. They have a broad range, mainly from the Jerusalem hills northward. They tend to prefer areas featuring cool brush where they can lay in peace during the day.

What does this creature or plant look like?:

Wild boar look very similar to domestic pigs. One difference would be that "pig" refers to the barnyard variety, while a wild boar is the kind that lives out in nature. Another difference is that some wild boar have tusks, unlike pigs.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

My first instinct was to run, but as soon as the boar saw us, they scurried away as fast as they could. It seemed as though they were scared of us, too, so I realized there was no reason for me to feel frightened!

Where does it live?:

The wild boar are found in the hills of Carmel Mountain. Haifa has plenty of open land with shade that is perfect for creatures like boar. You can find them while trekking through the hills surrounding Haifa.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

Wild boar very much enjoy cool weather and will eat practically anything, though their preferred menu includes fresh fruit and vegetables, mushrooms, acorns and dead rodents.
