They feed on bamboo, raise their young and play in the trees. Mouse lemurs are nocturnal primates, which feed on a variety of plants and small insects. Ring tailed lemurs live in large social groups and spend lots of time playing with each other and grooming one another. Both males and females exhibit scent marking behavior. During the mating season, males will coat their tales in smelly secretions as a way to show off their fitness. The frogs obtain their toxicity from mites they eat. Aside from the mites, they feed on small ants and spiders.
Leeches are abundant in healthy forests. They are prey for birds, frogs, and other small animals. Like most of Madagascar’s lemurs, they are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss and poaching. The elusive fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox) and birds of prey also pose a threat to lemurs. Not much is known about the overall status of poison frogs in the wild. It is likely that they too are threatened by loss of habitat. This is why rainforest conservation is so important to protect all of these amazing species!
