They even built things out of the mud and use the mud to help build their houses!
According to stories that people told me when I visited, the volcano used to be vey dangerous to the town because it used to erupt fire, lava and ashes. It was difficult for the local people to live near the volcano. As the story goes, a local priest threw holy water into the lava to get rid of evil spirits inside the volcano. Once the holy water touched the volcano, the fire inside turned into mud! The mud has been helping the community and its people ever since.
There are other volcanos in Colombia that aren´t made of mud and are very dangerous. One volcanic eruption in 1985 killed 25,000 people! Colombians who live near active volcanoes need to be prepared to evacuate if scientists believe that there is an eruption nearby.
