I traveled as far as Monte Plata, which is a 27-minute, 12-mile drive from Don Juan.
I have traveled to Monte Cristi, which is a 5-hour drive or 149 miles from where I live in Don Juan. I took a bus to get there. I have also traveled to Samaná, which is a 78-mile, two-hour drive. Other places include Jarabacoa, La Romana and Santo Domingo. Jarabacoa is an 80-mile, three-hour drive; La Romana is a 29-mile, 1-hour drive and Santo Domingo is a 40-mile, 1-hour and a half drive.
This week, I got around by walking and taking the guagua (bus).
The most interesting place I visited this week was the home of some Jehova witness missionaries. They had a pool table, a piano, a tree house and two dogs -- which is rather unusual for Don Juan. Most houses here have curtains for doors and very limited space. I have only seen one other house in Don Juan with enough space for a piano or a pool table. I also went to pick up a package in Monte Plata and stopped by a nearby colmado (convenience store) to buy some very tasty watermelon juice.
