The Future of Belize! Meet Justin, Santiago, Britney, and Geraldine

After lunch, all kids come back to school until 3:30 p.m., when they usually go straight home.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

Justin takes the school bus to school, while Santiago either bikes or walks with his cousins. Both Geraldine and Britney come to school by walking or by bike, either with friends or with their siblings.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

Most kids in the village go home for lunch, since they live so close to school and have an hour and a half off for lunch. Justin's favorite food is rice and beans, which is lucky because he eats it most days for lunch. Santiago, Geraldine and Britney all love pizza. However, Santiago prefers cheese, while the girls' favorite type of pizza is pepperoni.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

At school, classes are taught in English, so in classrooms you will only hear English. However, outside of school, Spanish is spoken the majority of the time. Sometimes, you may also hear a little bit of Belizean Kriol being spoken, especially by the teachers.

To say hello is Spanish you say hola! However, according to Santiago, a lot of the boys here also say perro, which translates to dog, but is also used to say "hello dude" informally to friends.

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

Common boys' names at the school are Justin, variations of Aidan and Adrian, and Lucas. Common girls' names include Andrea, Adriana, and Britney.
