Sharing Perspectives

While I was abroad in Singapore, I had the opportunity to meet various kinds of people. Most of these individuals were students since the main reason I was in Singapore was to study at the university, NTU. One of my courses for the semester was linguistics, and this class was scheduled just before lunch, which I would eat with my friends from that course. These friends were called Chelsea and Kirthana, and both of them were local Singaporean students.

The first few times we had lunch seemed a bit awkward in my opinion, since we did not know each other well enough. However, before long, we all became pretty close and started talking about many different topics. Neither of these Singaporean girls had many American friends at the time, and as a result, they often asked questions about what life was like in the United States. This was a pretty big question, and I did not really know where to begin! I have lived my whole life in the same part of California, and have lived most recently in Minnesota for college. Talking about my experience living in those places was challenging, since I never had to think about explaining it before.

In the end, I did my best to describe what life was like for someone of Mexican heritage like me living in the United States. I started off by explaining my identity.
