Rooted in the Environment - Taiwan's Culture and Community

Introduction:

When I was thinking about what country I wanted to live in to teach abroad, the natural beauty of Taiwan was one of the first things that caughy my attention. I have always been a huge nature lover! Back in Colorado, I spend as much time as possible outdoors. My favorite pastimes are hiking and reading.

One of my favorite quotes is by John Muir: “The mountains are calling and I must go”. This quote speaks to me as I have always felt most at home surrounded by trees, sunshine, and fresh mountain air. No matter the continent I am on, whether it be North America, Europe, or Asia, I have always been the happiest and most relaxed when I can look around and see mountains as far as the eye can see.

Taiwan has it all! Not only does it have incredible mountains covered in nothing but green, but it also has beautiful beaches. Taiwan is a relatively small island at only 13,975 square miles but it certainly packs a lot of phenomenal views in a small package!

What makes this environment special or different?:

The main island of Taiwan is a very unique place. It is situated on the Tropic of Cancer so the weather is never very cold and always quite humid. This means that nearly every square inch of the island that isn’t paved or developed has some sort of green plants!
