Growing Up in Denmark

She remembers learning through English songs but didn't know what they were singing most of the time.

Hej is "hello" in Danish.

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

Girl names like Freja, Emma and Sophie/Sophiaj are popular. Some common boy names are Mads, Casper and Christian.

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

The courses are fairly similar to American ones: Danish, math, science, religion, PE and history. One that stands out is a course focused on being outdoors and learning about the environment. From a young age, kids are sent outside to freely play and interact with nature. It's seen as a valuable part of development in Denmark and other Scandinavian countries.

As she got older, they started taking courses covering English, the sciences, and German or French. Her favorites were PE, especially when it was a swimming class, and the other language courses. 

What is your homework like?:

Homework is very rarely handed out. She recalled receiving math homework with six questions on it, but that was about it. 

What do you like to do after school? Do you have a favorite sport or game?:

She loved playing sports. She did soccer, swimming and gymnastics (which she still does now!).

Who is your favorite famous person?:

As a kid, she didn't really have anyone in mind. As a teenager, her favorites were Zac Eferon, Dylan O’brien, Selena Gomez, Rihanna, Shakira and Lady Gaga.

What kinds of music do you listen to?:

She has always loved pop artists, both from Denmark and the United States.
