"Please Stand Back From The Closing Door"

Introduction:

Love it or hate it, the MTA and the subway have a special place in my New Yorker heart. While often delayed and crowded, the city's train system is so central to life in the city that I do miss it from time to time. Luckily, Hong Kong's MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is quite similar, and do I dare say better than New York's?

Reaching most corners of the city, Hong Kong has an extensive transportation system made of double-decker buses, mini-buses, trains, trams, and even ferry boats!

How do people get around?:

Hong Kong, like New York, is made up of islands, and water plays a big role in the city's transportation system. However, the city is also made up of a number of hills and mountains, and I have noticed that the city's geography has a huge impact on how people get around.

For the most part, a majority of the people in the city use the train and bus systems. Hong Kong can be split into three parts: Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. You can think of Hong Kong Island as something similar to Manhattan. A lot of the city's businesses are located there and it's teeming with skyscrapers. However, the island is separated from Kowloon and the New Territories by Victoria Harbor. In addition, most Hong Kongers live in these two neighborhoods.
