Our News

We have many animal lovers in this batch, including three other grantees who are working with gibbons, bearded pigs and elephants in Malaysia.

What did I read this week?:

Currently, I am reading lots of scientific articles about sea turtle nesting behavior, as well as Haruki Murakami’s "1Q84."

What games or sports did I play this week?:

While I didn't play any sports this past week, I like to play badminton and tennis with my friends at UMT. Because it is so sunny and hot during the day, many people (including me) don’t start practice until the sun has set, usually around 8:00 p.m. Some committed players continue practicing until midnight.

Other news from this week:

I learned how to use a theodolite! Does anyone know what a theodolite is? Until last week I had never heard of it. Now that I have, let me introduce you to one of the best elevation mapping tools on the market today! A theodolite is used to measure the elevation points over a certain geographic area of interest, allowing scientists to create a map displaying the elevation of a given area. This handy tool can be used to study beach erosion and tidal influence on beach topography. My friend is using the map we created last week to better understand elevation profiles of river terrapin nesting beaches. Do you like going to the beach? Have you noticed changes in the slope of the beach or tidal patterns over the course of the summer?
