Most people are multilingual, meaning they speak more than one language. Some of the most common languages include Bahasa (bahasa means "language") Malaysia, English and Chinese. Bahasa Malaysia and English are required in most elementary, middle and high schools. Some school also offer classes taught in Chinese. When entering college, students must pass an English language exam. At many universities, classes are taught in English and exams are given in English. Although most people know English, I hope to learn more Bahasa Malaysia before I return to America. So little by little, I will continue to learn! Sedikit sedikit jadi bukit! (Little by little the mountain grows)!
Instead of dollars, we use the ringgit in Malaysia. One ringgit is equal to 4.23 U.S. dollars. Ringgits are small, colorful bills made out of plastic. The illustrations on ringgits tell the history of Malaysia and depict significant flora (vegetation) and fauna (animals) of Malaysia. My favorite bill is the 20-ringgit note. Can you see why?
