When I visited a fish market in Joal Fadiouth, some of the fishing boats were so big they couldn't come to the shore. Instead, horse and donkey carts went into the ocean to transport the fish off of the boats and up onto the land. When driving to Joal Fadiouth, I also saw a marche hebdomidaire (livestock market) where people were selling sheep and goats. There were hundreds of animals, and I saw people walking their goats on leashes. Animals are truly a central part of Senegalese life!
In Joal Fadiouth, I saw pigs playing in the ocean, which was super cute! I also saw a man washing his sheep in the river, which I had never seen before. This week I got to ride in a donkey cart for the first time, which was super-scary because the cart is flat and the roads were bumpy. My host family is getting a goat this week--I will send you pictures when it arrives!
