This week, I am interviewing one of my closest friends here in Malawi, Pricilla! I first met Pricilla when I came to Malawi in June 2022. She works with me in the research laboratory, and we clicked instantly. When I returned to Malawi for the second time, we began spending even more time together. On weekends, I would go over to her house, and we would bake together and watch TV.
"Pricilla Yvonne Suleman-Johnstone."
She pointed in the direction she lived. I scoffed and said, "Cilla, they can't see that" We giggled.
"I live in Blantyre behind Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, which is close to the laboratory at the university where we work. I live in a three-bedroom house. There is one bathroom and toilet that we share and a kitchen and a little pantry, and it has a little outside."
Priscilla and I poke fun at each other, so I interject, "Don't you mean a backyard? She responds with "I mean, if it is surrounded by a yard, is it really a backyard? We both continue to laugh.
"My house is different than the typical Malawian houses. My floor is tile, and the houses in the village have dirt or cement floors. We also have a T.V. and a living room where we watch T.V., but I can't think of how else to describe my house."
