One of my favorite things about traveling is getting to try new foods! In Romania, there are lots of soups, meats, cheeses, pasteries and drinks to enjoy. I have had a great time getting to know Romanian culture better by enjoying some of the local foods.
I have definitely gotten to try some new foods since I have lived in Romania. Romania produces many of delicious cheeses, and one of the most popular ones is a creamy and salty sheeps milk cheese called telemea. This cheese is really good with mămăliga (pronounced mah-ma-lee-guh, this is a creamy, cooked cornmeal--kind of like a porridge. Its one of my favorite side dishes!) but sometimes I think it can be a little too salty to be eaten by itself.
I have gotten to try lots of new pastries and treats, like the popular dessert called kürtőskalács (pronounced kurts-ko-lecs). This is a fried, cylinder-shaped dough sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. It originated in Hungary, but has been adopted by Romanians as well. It is sold all over the place, especially at outdoor events like markets or concerts, and it is so delicious!
