In primary school (elementary school), children learn in Kiswahili, the national language of Tanzania. In Kiswahili the way to say "Hello" is "Mambo," and you will say "Poa" (Cool) in response. When you greet someone who is older than you (if you are a child), you'd say "Shikamoo," and the response from the adult would be "Marahaba."
Some common kids names at school are Juma, Cleophus and Muhamed.
In school the children study English, math, East African history and more. Most of the children that I have met like English the most because they think it sounds funny!
For homework kids usually have to read a short story in Kiswahili and then translate it into English. When they go to class the next day, they will be required to tell the story in English in front of their classmates.
One of the games that kids here play is called First to Touch the Flag Pole. After school, all of the kids run out of their classrooms as soon as the bell rings and try to be the first to run and touch the flagpole in front of the school.
