Malnutrition and Anemia in Children

Introduction:

Here in Peru, there is a national problem of malnutrition and anemia in children. The government has set up programs to try to combat these issues. The Peace Corps health sector has partnered with the government here in Peru to help provide education on these topics.

What community need did I learn about?:

In Peru, there is a big issue with malnutrition and anemia in young children. There is a need for education on this topic and help for new mothers to prevent their children from developing these ailments.

Why does the community have this need?:

There is a lack of knowledge about good nutrition and eating habits for children here in the community. Because of the farming culture, many kids are eating mostly carbohydrates such as rice and potatoes. Many people lack the knowledge on iron rich foods and why it is important to feed their children these foods.

Is this need being met? How?:

Thre are government programs here in Peru that bring educational sessions to the homes of new mothers to teach them about alimentation and iron-rich diets for their children. As a health volunteer in my community, I help a lot within this problem. I help lead demonstrative sessions in the health post or municipality building about iron-rich foods and how to make them taste good for children.
