In Italy, daily life moves at a rhythm shaped by time-honored traditions that celebrate connection, comfort, and beauty. From sipping a quick morning espresso to enjoying an aperitivo (aperitif) at sunset and taking an evening stroll, or passeggiata (leisurely stroll), Italians find joy in the flow of everyday moments.
I learned about three everyday Italian traditions: having coffee in the morning, sharing an aperitivo (aperitif) in the late afternoon, and taking an evening passeggiata (leisurely stroll). In Florence, this evening stroll often follows the River Arno, where locals and visitors enjoy the fading sunlight, soft breezes, and the view of bridges, like the Ponte Vecchio, glowing in gold.
Italians start their day with a quick espresso at the bar because it’s a moment to connect with others and ease into the morning with intention and community. The aperitivo is important because it creates time to relax, socialize, and transition from the workday to the evening in a joyful, communal way.
