How do people get around?:

Before cars and trucks became common, Cypriots mostly depended on their own feet and on donkeys to get around and transport supplies. Yes, that’s right— donkeys! Here’s a photo of my mom making friends with a donkey when we visited Cyprus together a few years ago. I haven’t seen any donkeys yet on this visit, except for this cute little fellow to the right, which is a flowerpot shaped like a donkey cart from bygone times. Back then, traveling regularly between towns and villages was much less common than it is today.

Nowadays, cars zip by, going round and round as if on a merry-go-round. Cars are the main means of getting around in Cyprus today. It seems as though almost everyone has a car, and it’s common for families to have more than one.

Quite often, Cypriots drive their cars in circles! Why in circles, you may ask? Because Cyprus’s transportation system really likes roundabouts, which are circular traffic features that keep automobiles constantly moving, moving, moving, allowing drivers to enter and leave the circle of traffic without ever stopping.
