Cyprus is remarkable for the range of environments that exist so close together. One can drive from the beaches past salt flats (remember those?) through rolling farmland to the mountains (and back) in a matter of hours. There are even ski resorts in the mountains that come alive with locals and tourists when the snow flies in winter at the highest elevations, as it did this weekend, when my friends and I went skiing in the Troodos Mountains. Can you imagine parts of such a sunny Mediterranean island being transformed into a winter wonderland? No?
