In the Azores, people still speak Portuguese, but some people say it sounds like an entirely different language. Azoreans have a different accent that is a bit more melodic, and they tend to cut off the ends of their words. It reminded me of how we all speak a bit uniquely depending on where we are from, even in the U.S.!
On an island, things tend to be much more expensive because many of their groceries and supplies have to be flown or shipped over from the mainland. The only things that are more affordable in the Azores are pineapples because they are grown right on the island!
This week, I tried fresh water from the natural springs at Furnas. If you look at the picture, the water might look like it is just normal water. But it was actually bubbly like sparkling water and tasted like iron!
Since the ocean is so close, the Azores is known for its fresh seafood. My favorite type was the limpets, similar to mussels, which are served with garlic and a bit of oil. I also enjoyed trying some octopus which was served grilled with mashed local yams.
