Living in Manaus

Some that you may know include açaí, guava, banana, mango and passion fruit. For many communites that reside in the Amazon, the environment provides nearl everything. Trees and branches are used to make shelters, boats, baskets, clothes and more. The forest provides fruit and the river provides fish.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

The city is very hilly, so the lower parts of the city can easily flood. The irrigation systems in certain parts of the city, typically lower-income areas, were not built to handle the amount of rainfall that Manaus gets. For this reason, flooding can be quite common. However the flooding that can occur is sometimes so extreme that it can lead to people being trapped in their house and death. Many ceilings cannot sustain the extreme, consistent rainfall, so leaking and damaged ceilings are very common. I currently have a steady leak over my bed. As climate change has intensified, the city has experienced acid rain caused by air pollution from cars, but acid rain occurs infrequently.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

Most people who live in the city always carry an umbrella, either a U.V. umbrella to protect from the sun's rays and/or an umbrella to protect from the rain. People typically stay indoors during rainstorms, as it can become dangerous to walk around or even drive during intense rainstorms. To combate extreme heats, and due to high electricity bills, most people opt to keep all of their windows open to ciruculate the air and cool off their houses. This, of course, comes with its own set of challenges as mosquitos can become a bit of a hassle.
