Chatting with Beatriz

Introduction:

Beatriz and I met in a commuity group where we shared a lot of common interests, including topics in history and race. She loves samba and teaching English to students interested in traveling to the United States.

What is your full name?:

Beatriz L.

Where do you live? What is your house like?:

Santos, a city south of the Sao Paulo capitol, close to the beach. I live in an apartment with three rooms, two bathrooms. It's in a tall building, about 30 floors.

What is your family like?:

I was closer to my mother's family, and my grandfather was the blackest person in the family. He didn't say this with words, but now I understand that he experienced a lot of racism. My mother was a bit different in the family. She stopped strightening her hair, for example. My parents give me a lot of affection.

How do you get around?:

I usually take the train, of if I need to get to the city, in Sao Paulo, I may take BlaBlaCar, and then use the metro in the city.

(BlaBlaCar is a ride share service, similiar to Uber, but where other passengers will join you on the journey. It's often much cheapter than Uber, too.)

What types of clothing do you like to wear?:

I usually wear skirts and dresses. It's often too hot to cover my legs... haha!
