The main language spoken in Penghu,Taiwan is Mandarin Chinese. However, in rural parts of the archipelago, some people speak Taiwanese Hokkien. Some of my older coworkers talk to each other in Taiwanese Hokkien. My younger coworkers say that they spoke it when they were kids, but they do not speak it much anymore. It's not a very widely spoken language, but Taiwan is trying to preserve it and get more kids to speak it! My school has a weekly Taiwanese Hokkien class for the kids; for some of them it's the only time they'll use the language
The money that's used here is called the New Taiwan Dollar, or NTD for short. One NTD is equal to three cents in USD.
A bottle of water here costs around 30 NTD, which is 91 cents!
The best meal I had this week was my go to fried rice from one of my favorite restaurants. It's the kung pao chicken fried rice, and it's nothing like kung pao chicken in the United States. It's splendidly spicy and really flavorful! The rice has egg, bean sprouts, chicken and chili peppers. I get this for 100 NTD or $3.04.
