Water vs. The World

Introduction:

The United States is trying to adapt to climate change on a daily basis. As the global population continues to rise, the world is becoming more and more aware of natural resources that are slowly, or not so slowly, disappearing. Fresh water, one of the most important resources, is proving to be an issue for US residents as well as the rest of the world, but in bigger ways than you think!

What makes this environment special or different?:

Like I said in my introductory journal last week, Chicago is actually a rarity in terms of its source of water because it’s located next to Lake Michigan. Lake Michigan is part of the largest freshwater system in the world called the Great Lakes, which means I can drink water straight from the tap. For the most part, the majority of the United States can drink from the tap as well, but many people have stopped after the Flint Water Crisis in the state of Michigan.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

The Great Lakes are an incredible environmental luxury for the United States and Canada, who also shares a border with the fresh water phenomenon. However, only a small portion of the US gets water from the Great Lakes. The rest of the country gets it from smaller lakes, groundwater reservoirs, mountains and rivers, all of which undergo intense purification processes at water treatment plants.
