Calçots of Catalonia

Introduction:

Bon día! Good day! Today I will take you guys on a little farming adventure. Here in Catalonia, it's calçot (a type of green onion) season, meaning it's also calçotada (social gathering to eat calçots) season. Picture a bunch of people gathered around a grill pilled high with giant green onions. Calçotadas are a tradition here, a reason to see loved ones to enjoy the first warm weeks of spring. We eat calçots by dipping them in a yummy tomato and almond sauce and munching the tangy onion by the bulb. It's a fun tradition, and a great way to remember how lovely it is that our earth provides us such fun foods.

What does this creature or plant look like?:

When I first saw a calçot I thought (and said outloud): wow, that really looks like a green onion. I was quickly corrected. Calçots are a "very special" green onion that have their own registered name. They're much sweeter, very tasty and very tall. Some calçots reach up to a foot and a half tall!

How did I feel when I saw it?:

I remember thinking, this is what people are all excited about? I mean, it's just an onion after all. But what I love so much about calçots and calçotadas is that, well, it's just an onion! A silly little onion that brings families together and fills hungry tummies. So therefore, it's an awesome, silly little onion.
