Tropical World of Wonders

It's this abundance of life, on top of all of the cool mountains, volcanoes and beaches, that makes this country such a unique place.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

This country’s tropical climate and fertile volcanic soil make it a good place to grow a wide variety of crops. Coffee, bananas and pineapples are all grown here. Many people are able to get fresh fruits and vegetables from their local markets. Additionally, many of these crops are shipped off to other countries. This is a big part of the economy here.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Although Costa Rica is a beautiful place, there are some downsides. There are natural disasters that cause problems for certain communities in Costa Rica. For one, there are earthquakes. A few of them have been very destructive and have caused lots of damage to certain towns. There are also problems that come from the active volcanoes. Sometime eruptions put lots of ash and smoke into the air, and it makes it hard for many people and animals to breathe.

One big challenge faced by Costa Rica as a whole is protection of the environment. Since the country holds so much of the world’s biodiversity, there is pressure to take care of the environment. There have been issues of air pollution, litter, deforestation and more.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

I learned that many Costa Rican homes are built to hold up against earthquakes. There are specific building codes that make sure buildings are sturdy enough to stay together during these types of events.
