Traditions in London

Introduction:

Since I got to the United Kingdom, I have really enjoyed learning about the history and stories of London and learning about the customs and traditions unique to this part of the world! One of the most delicious traditions I have learned about so far is the Sunday roast!

What tradition did I learn about?:

Every Sunday, some people in London sit down for a filling mid-day meal called Sunday roast. This usually means that people eat roasted meat and potatoes with different toppings and sauces!

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Many people believe this tradition started a long time ago, around 1485, when the King's guards became so famous for how much meat they ate, they gained the nickname "the Beefeaters"! At the time, these men were known for cooking their roasted meats on Sunday mornings.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

This tradition started in London and shares cultural ties to the city! Many restaurants still have a special Sunday roast menu, and many people use the meal as a way to gather with friends and family on one of their days-off.
