A Tasty Christmas Treat: Dresdner Stollen

Introduction:

When you enter a Christmas market, different scents fill the air: Glühwein (hot mulled wine) and Kinderpunsch (hot apple cider), Gebrannte Mandeln (roasted almonds), Bratwurst (sausages), and the famous Dresdner Stollen (Dresden Stollen). This treat is a staple at any Christmas market across Germany, but the Dresdner Stollen is claimed to be the best.

What food did I try?:

I tried Dresdner Stollen, which is a loaf of sweet bread with golden raisins inside and powdered sugar or marzipan on the outside. The closest thing in the US that I could compare this to is fruit cake, but in my opinion, Stollen is much better. You can also find other types of Stollen at the Christmas markets, like poppyseed Stollen or butter Stollen.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I was so excited when I tried Stollen for the first time! I had learned so much about it in my German classes, both in high school and at University, that it felt unreal to actually be holding Stollen. To add to the excitement, the first time I tried Stollen was at the Dresdner Striezelmarkt. Striezel is an old German word for Stollen and the Striezelmarkt is where the original Dresdner Stollen is sold. But wait, there's more!
