Transportation in Dresden

A quick word of warning, if a German ever invites you for an afternoon stroll, get your hiking boots on. While lovely and something I quite enjoy, I was surprised to find out an afternoon stroll is easily a one to two-hour, maybe even three-hour, hike through the beautiful scenery of Dresden.

Dresden’s public transportation network works within its natural environment and not against it. The major, long-distance train line runs alongside the Elbe River. This is connected to the historic trade lines, but also is more efficient since the land is flatter alongside the river. Dresden sits in a small river valley so many of the tram lines run along the base of hills and curve with the river.
