Food in Fiji

 

What food did I try?:

I tried a lot of different foods and even got the chance to learn how to cook some too. I can be somewhat of a picky eater but I still made an effort to try anything put in front of me, I wanted to try everything. Some of my favorites were anything cooked in a Lovo, mangoes, coconuts, breadfruit, passionfruit, cassava, taro, dalo, rice and roti. Oh yeah, and a lot of fish, fish is something everyone will have daily. Fish, shrimp, crabs lobster, and anything else that comes from the ocean are very common to be on the dinner plate. On Beqa there weren't too many meat options except for fish unless something was freshly butchered like chickens or pigs. There were no goats or cows on Beqa. There are also a lot of very tasty meals cooked in coconut milk called Vakalolo, and I highly would recommend it. 

In Fiji, there is a large Indian population, and the food definitely reflects some dishes that come from them, like curried chicken or goat. I was taught how to make roti and curry during my first two months of training. Fiji was also colonized by England which brought a love for tea. I would drink tea for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, something completely different from what I was used to. 

Once while visiting another Peace Corps Volunteer's village in Vanua Levu, we had a fun picnic on the beach and I tried a few foods for the first time. The first was starfruit, and it was one of the most delicious fruits that I have ever tried. First you take it fresh off the tree, and you eat the peel like an apple. It tasted like Starburst candy!  Amazing! On that picnic, I also tried seaworms. The taste was not too bad, but I was not a fan of the texture...
