Communities in Dakuibeqa

Introduction:

When you join the Peace Corps, you have to do a lot of training to learn how to help the community to which you are assigned, but that can be very vague. Every village is different and every village has different wants and needs. When some volunteers get to a new place with the goal to help the local village, they sometimes have the wrong ideas. Some people think that their goal should be to make the village as similar as possible to what their own home town looks like, but that is not the right approach. You have to work with the village communities to come together for a common goal in line with what they want.

In Dakuibeqa there are a few different community organizations that all work towards the common goal of bettering the village for everyone. I was working with three in particular during my time there, the Women's Club, the Youth Group, and the Teacher Group.

The Women's Club consisted of every adult woman in the village. During meetings with the club, we discussed many different possibilities for goals to achieve during my time there. They wanted to start a new business in the village that would be sustainable, to earn money to fund other projects. After a lot of planning, we came up with the idea that they would start beekeeping and then sell the honey to earn money.

The Youth Group consisted of men between the ages of 18-35.
