Potatoes are a staple of Galician agriculture and diet. Fun fact: before the potato was introduced in Galicia around the 1600s, the primary staple in the Galician diet was the castaña, the chestnut. The autumn festival Magosto in November celebrates the end of the lighter half of the year and the beginning of winter. On this day, people celebrating by roasting and eating chestnuts and by decorating their faces with the soot and ash from the fires. I celebrated my first Magosto this year with my school and had a great time.
