Tainan and Taipei are at the south and the north of the island, respectively. In Chinese, "nan" (南) means South while "bei" (北) means North. So Tainan literally translates to "South (of) Taiwan" while Taipei translates to "North (of) Taiwan". Because of this, it's easy to guess that the two cities are far apart. They are about 307 kilometers apart. Can you figure out how many miles that is?
If you look at a map of Taiwan, you would be able to see cities at the top and bottom of the island. I've been from Yilan all the way at the top to Kenting all the way at the bottom. The only region I've yet to see more of is the east coast, which I'm hoping to visit soon.
This week I rode the High Speed Rail to get from city to city. From there, I've used the bus system to get around since I don't have my bicycle here in Taipei. I've heard from other conference members that the buses on the island cities are not as reliable though. They seem to work best in bigger cities.
Sanxia is the area in New Taipei City where we are currently staying. Our resort is called Dabangan Resort, and is by far the most interesting place I've been this week. We've been surrounded by forests, hot springs and several nature preserves.
