You will not find your typical Asian cuisine served at a local resturant. in Timor-Leste. Timor is known for the coffee (cafe) and nine different types of banana (the favorite side for breakfast, lunch and dinner is rice (etu). However, I enjoy trying the most exotic foods when I am traveling, so let's find out what these may be in Timor!
It is a tradition in Timorese culture that whenever there is a major event such as a wedding, funeral or graduation. there is one paticular exotic dish that will be present. I'll give you a hint: some may call it "man's best friend." That's right! Dog is an exotic delicacy here in Timor Leste! I first tried dog (na'an asu) when I attended a wedding with my host family recently.
Upon arriving in Timor Leste, I already knew that dog (na'an asu) was a delicacy and that I would see it being served on the menu at some point. My first time I tried dog, I thought it was beef (na'an carrow) so I added it to my plate. My host mother told me that it was dog (na'an asu) and that I should try it. This was it! My chance to try a cultural delicacy. I placed the meat on my fork and put it into my mouth, and would you believe that it tasted just like beef (na'an carrow)!
