Here in San Salvador, there are five ways to get around the city, including taking the bus, using Uber, hailing a taxi, walking or driving your own car. I have used all five of these options! However, I mainly use the last one because I like to be safer and more efficient. In the next section, I’ll explain why I choose to invest in a car and avoid using other means of transportation.
Most people in the city use the bus system to get around. There are three different types of buses here: microbuses ($0.25 per ride), "regular" buses ($0.20 per ride) and bigger air-conditioned buses ($0.35 per ride). If you were to come to San Salvador, the buses aren’t what you think they might be. They're not uniformly-painted, and most look like old school buses (ones that were at one time used in the U.S., but now don't meet U.S. emission standards) or old charter buses. The routes and stops are unofficial, where passengers are expected to know where the bus is going, and you can, most of the time, get off and on where you want to.
I’ve ridden the bus a couple of times, but there are more than a few rules to using the system. First, one never takes anything of value on the bus, like a personal computer, an instrument (for musicians like me) or loads of cash.
