Moving Through a Megacity

Introduction:

Delhi is one of the largest and busiest cities in the world, home to tens of millions of people going to school, work, markets, and temples every day. If everyone tried to get around the same way, the city would grind to a halt. Instead, Delhi uses an incredible mix of transportation options that keep the city moving.

On any given street, you might see a sleek underground metro train, colorful auto rickshaws weaving through traffic, city buses packed with riders, bicycles stacked with deliveries, and cars inching along side by side. The noise, motion, and energy can feel overwhelming at first, but there’s a rhythm to it all. Trucks, for example, will have the words “Blow Horn” on the back, encouraging people to honk at them. In America, we find honking distracting and rude, but in Delhi, with so much traffic, it’s the only way the drivers know if there’s a tiny rickshaw behind them!

Transportation in Delhi tells a story about how people adapt to density, history, and growth. Old neighborhoods built long before cars existed still thrive, and in those areas, pedal cabs are the primary way to get around. The ring road around the city, meanwhile, is host to the most modern cars you can imagine!
