My First Days Aboard the JOIDES Resolution

It was built in 1978, and it has been used by scientist for research since 1984. As I walk up and down the main flight of stairs, the walls are plastered with logos of expeditions that stretch back to the beginning of its scientific history in the 1980s.

Much of the scientific work that we do on the JOIDES Resolution is directly connected to learning more about our environment. By looking at samples of earth and rocks from underneath the ocean, scientists have learned what the earth's environment was like long ago. For example, they learned that 55 million years ago the Arctic region had a subtropical climate! These discoveries can help us understand what might happen to our planet as our climate changes today. This is research that is all made possible thanks to this amazing ship!
