Living in Siberia

Extreme cold can even prevent machines from working properly, so people really have to be prepared.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

Since Russia started expanding into Siberia hundreds of years ago, people have been adapting to living here. With modern transportation, the huge distances have been conquered by railroads and planes. The Trans-Siberian Railroad is one of the longest railways in the world and goes all the way from Moscow (which is not in Siberia) to Vladivostok, on the Pacific Ocean.

Adapting to the cold has become a part of Russian culture. Warm clothes are sold everywhere, including in shops under the street. Every restaurant and public place has a coat rack or wardrobe to put your outer-wear while you are inside. Offering tea to guests and drinking tea throughout the year has become a huge part of the culture, in part because tea helps you get warm when it is cold outside.

How have you adapted to your environment?
