While I mostly stayed around Medellín this week, I had the opportunity to take a small day trip to the nearby suburb of Rionegro last Sunday. The bus ride from Medellín to Rionegro took 45 minutes, and I enjoyed the scenic views of Medellín's tropical surroundings as we climbed into the mountains toward Rionegro from the valley where Medellín rests.
The furthest I've traveled so far was 82 miles to get from Medellín to the small pueblo of Jardín. By bus, the journey took about three hours. The journey took me from the big city of Medellín to rural areas in the Colombian coffee-growing region.
I take the bus to work every day. My bus ride is always an adventure since local buses usually don't have fixed stops. Instead, they just pull over when someone flags the bus to board. Some drivers drive carefully, but others drive as if they're in a huge rush. Sometimes I feel like I'm riding a roller coaster instead of a bus!
I walked through the historic Prado neighborhood with my roommates. Although it is, unfortunately, a dangerous area to visit past dark, during the day it is tranquil and hosts many old buildings with vibrant colors and fascinating architecture.
