Nature News

They belong to the village chief, called a kgosi [co-see].

What was the coolest thing I saw in nature this week?:

I saw a video posted by one of the companies here that offers safari rides of a crocodile trying to pull a buffalo into the river. The buffalo was trying to get loose. They both fought very hard. In the end, the buffalo got away. That would have been a very big meal for the crocodile. Perhaps he bit off more than he could chew!

I saw a pair of fish eagles, a male and a female, which mate for life. They were high up in the trees near the river looking for fish to catch for lunch. They have white heads and a wingspan of over six and a half feet. They are very majestic!

Other Nature News from this week:

The big news this week was that the electricity was off for two entire days! I think it was because of the weather, either a lightning strike to a substation, or perhaps the wind took down some power lines. It was an extra challenge with no power, especially making meals and seeing in the dark. I always try to have food on hand that I don't have to cook, such as peanut butter and jelly or cans of tuna. I realized some people live this way all the time, cooking over a wood fire or using a gas stove and they would have lanterns to help them see at night.

It was an extra challenge at the clinic where I work with no electricity, too. Luckily, most of the rooms have windows and the sunlight allowed us to keep working. Most records are kept on paper, so, for once, the lack of computers was easier, as well. Hopefully soon the clinic can get a generator, so they can be prepared for the next power outage.
