In the city, pigeons are very common, and you can often see them walking around squares and sidewalks looking for food.
I have learned that there are other wild animals living in the forest and countryside around Mainz, such as wild boars (wild pigs) and deer. These animals are much harder to spot because they usually stay in the wooded areas and avoid people. Even though I haven't seen any myself, I think it is exciting to know there are more animals that live outside of the city areas.
One of the coolest things I have experienced in nature so far is exploring the castles along the Rhine River here in Germany! Some of these castles sit high up on hillsides and are tucked away, so you have to hike up winding trails to reach them. The hikes can be a little challenging, but the views at the top make it all worth it!
What amazes me the most is how old these castles are and how much history they hold. Some have stood for hundreds of years! It is incredible to imagine people living in the castles long before cars, phones, or even electricity existed. Walking through the ruins and looking out over the river makes history feel like something you can actually step into. It also reminds me how nature and history come together to create something truly amazing!
Another cool thing i have noticed about the nature near Mainz along the Rhine is the vineyards growing along the hillsides! As I explore the Rhine River area, I have seen how grapevines grow in long rows across the slopes of the hills.
