It takes years to understand little details about how people do things and why. Even for locals, understanding their own culture is a life-long process. If I relied on stereotypes or generalizations to understand the French people I'm sharing a country with right now, I would miss these details and gain less from my experience living in France. France has proved to be a much more complicated country than I originally thought it would be, and I am grateful for that because it has made my time here a lot more interesting.
