From Here to There: Getting Around in Finland

Introduction:

In Finland, there are a lot of different ways to get around. The way you choose to travel depends on how far you plan to go! Today, we are going to focus on different methods of public transportation. This means talking about how you go short distances in a town (from your apartment to the university, the store, or the city center, for example) and also how to go longer distances (from your city to another city, or even to another country).

How do people get around?:

When traveling around Oulu, I do a lot of walking. Oulu has a lot of very nice sidewalk trails. Within a five minute walk from my apartment, there are three different small grocery stores! I also walk from my apartment to the university every day. Every morning the air keeps getting a little bit crisper as fall comes. When I started walking in August, I just needed a light jacket. I am now bringing my wool coat and mittens every day. Soon, I will need my winter coat and boots most days!

These trails can also be used for biking, which is another popular way to get around Oulu. I love walking or biking down the different trails to get to the city center: the forest smells like pine trees. I hear that many local students will bike all year, even in the snow, using special snow tires and wearing snow pants. It sounds very slippery!

For longer distances, I often take the bus.
