This past weekend, Princess Eugenie (ninth in line to the throne), married her longtime boyfriend, Jack Brooksbank. While Princess Eugenie is not a "working royal," meaning she doesn't have to attend to affairs of the crown (another word used to describe the royal family/monarch specifically), she still has to abide by the rules and traditions of the royal family. One of these traditions is the location of her marriage, which for many royals is either at Westminster Abbey, or in Princess Eugenie's case, Windsor Castle. On Sunday, just two days after the wedding, I was lucky enough to go to Windsor and see where she was married!
The tradition I learned about was the tradition of marriage. The reason so many royals get married at Windsor, specifically St. George's chapel within Windsor, is because Windsor is the oldest working castle in the United Kingdom. A "working castle" is a castle that is still used for state affairs and living quarters for the royal family. Thus, there is a lot of history at Windsor for the royal family, especially the current royal family. They loved Windsor Castle so much that they adopted Windsor as their last name back in 1917!
