Sofía is a vivacious and chatty 11-year-old niña antioqueña (Antioquian girl) who immediately befriended my friends and me when we visited her family's rural farm a few weeks ago. She served as an ideal tour guide for our visit, showing us all around her home as well as the school and chapel that serve the local San Juan community. She's also a great dancer and violinist, so we got to enjoy a special performance before we had to leave and head back to Medellín. Even though Sofía lives far away from the United States in Colombia, you'll see that she shares a lot of the same interests and dreams that you might have as a kid in New York!
For breakfast, I usually drink hot chocolate and snack on a piece of bread before my full breakfast comes. Then I might eat some cheese, eggs with rice, plantain or fried potatoes.
Lunch is our biggest meal! At lunchtime, the adults usually eat a meal made up of a soup followed by a main dish, which often includes rice, some type of meat or fish, a small salad and either fried plantain or potatoes. Since I'm a kid, though, I normally just eat a soup or a portion of the main dish.
Dinners in Colombia are much smaller than what you eat in the United States. For example, I like to eat some yogurt with cereal for dinner.
