Ker Sangri, the Desert Delicacy

Introduction:

Ker sangri is a dish made from the berries and beans of two desert plants. The result is a delicious sweet and spicy array of flavors.

What food did I try?:

I tried a traditional Rajasthani dish called ker sangri (kair sun-gree).

How did I feel when I tried it?:

When I tried this new dish, I was visiting another city in Rajasthan, called Jodhpur, along with a friend who had come to visit. We were enjoying a rooftop sunset and views of Jodhpur's blue city, excited to try the local cuisine recommended by our waiter. The dish was sweet, spicy and crunchy, and it did not disappoint! I ordered it again when I got home to Jaipur!

How is the food prepared?:

Ker Sangri is made from the small and sour ker berry along with sangri, a long green bean. Together, these ingredients are cooked in oil with spices like chili powder, tumeric, coriander and caraway. Top it off with raisins and cashews, and you are ready to enjoy this tangy delight!

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

The ker berries are harvested from a native desert shrub, while the sangri bean pods are collected from the khejari tree. Both plants are extremely well adapted to the heat and droughts of Rajathan's Thar Desert.
